The AVA award was earned for the innovative web design and functionality of AICPA's Start Here, Go Places online community http://community.StartHereGoPlaces.com.

This year is starting out to be a busy one for our human resources department as we add yet another member to our Couto Solutions family!  Joining our team of rock star developers is Carlos Nunez.  Carlos comes to us with a strong Carlos Nunezweb development background with a focus on gaming and social networks.  In fact, at his previous position he played a very large role in developing a social network for, you guessed it, gamers.  He is more than prepared to fill his role as Software Engineer here at Couto Solutions.

  • Doubling Down on Local Tech Community

Couto Solutions, the elite design development San Luis Obispo firm that specializes in building world class online communities, has been a longtimeCouto Solutions supporter of Softec and the local tech community.  Couto Solutions' founder and CEO Justin Couto firmly believes that it is the responsibility of local businesses to help foster and grow the tech sector on the Central Coast.  When asked about his continued support of local community efforts Justin stated, "It is our duty to give back to our community in ways that enable continued growth, expansion, and the viability of technology based businesses in our area.  We must create awareness around the opportunities that are available here and provide a rich community that supports continued develop of the people and companies on the Central Coast."

It is this commitment that motivated Justin to serve on the Softec Board of Directors and head up its web committee for several years.  Softec WebsiteIt was during his tenure that Justin decided he wanted to give back to Softec and the local community in a big way.  This is when Couto Solutions went all in and donated over 1,000 development hours and over $50,000 in software licensing when it delivered the Softec Community site a little over 1 ½ years ago.  In addition to creating a space for the community to meet online, the delivery of this new socially driven solution automated many of the tasks and tedium it took to run the volunteer organization.  It provides everything from event and sponsorship management to automatic newsletter generation.   Since the launch, the Softec community has grown steadily and we have been thrilled about it.

Recently, the team at Couto Solutions reevaluated the Softec site to see if there was a way to make it a more successful and more frequented destination for local technologists and business people on the Central Coast.  With the time people were already giving to facebook, LinkedIn, and twitter, they knew they would need to add some real value to increase usage of the site.  After a lot of thought and discovery, the team at Couto Solutions felt that if they could bring the same great features that help Softec run its organization to other smaller more focused groups in the community via the Softec site, it could be a big WIN for everyone.  As a result, Couto Solutions doubled down on its investment donating over 600 addition development hours to deliver "Softec Hosted Groups".  The new functionality brings event management, newsletter generation, and more to groups interested in hosting their organizations site on the Softec Hosted Groups Platform.  What is even better is that all Softec Group content gets bubbled up into the main Softec site and into the Softec newsletter giving local groups a much greater reach through the broader exposure provided by Softec's membership.  Local groups such as the SLO Tech Brew, the Central Coast Design Group, the High School Robotics Group, and the SLO .NET User Group are already taking advantage of this powerful new system AND THEY ARE LOVING IT.

To start your own group or to move your existing group to a Softec Hosted Group, please contact Softec via their contact page.  To learn more about group's already taking advantage of these features please visit the Softec Site Groups sections.

  • Couto Solutions Pays It Forward

We already know that it takes a big dream, a lot of determination and some downright hard work to start your own business.  But what about standard office necessities like desks?  What about office chairs?  And, what about that printer you’ll need to crank out copies of your business plan that you’ll be pitching to investors? When you're just starting out, these items can really dig into your already tight budget.  Couto Solutions is glad to be able to provide these items to a local organization that nurtures Cal Poly entrepreneurs..

The Cal Poly Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, based out of San Luis Obispo, benefitted from a donation made by Couto Solutions this summer.  The donation included a complete Action Office System by Herman Miller consisting of work stations, conference room furnishings, a receptionist station, a principal’s office setup, and a dozen high backed leather office chairs.  The donation also included a hand crafted, wood and metal, three station desk with a matching printer table and bookshelf.  This desk is where Couto Solutions got its very own spark working out of its original 96 square foot office!  In addition to all of this, also donated were a color laser printer and over twenty poster sized picture frames.  Hopefully, they’ll fill the frames with inspirational messages like “Never, never, never give up!” the motto of a true entrepreneur.  In all, the donation totaled over $20,000 worth of furniture and office equipment.

It’s not easy getting a business off the ground especially when you’re starting from scratch.  The Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship was created with the goal of opening the world of entrepreneurial opportunity to Cal Poly students as well as faculty members.    The Center focuses on getting students better prepared for the realities of starting a business in this economy as well as nurturing their educational efforts.  The donated furniture and office equipment has helped the Center furnish their new office and small business incubator facilities located in the Cal Poly Technology as well as a satellite office they occupy in San Luis Obispo.

Couto Solutions CEO Justin Couto says, “I understand well the challenges of starting a business, it’s not an easy task by any means.  If I would have had the opportunity to obtain the guidance that is now being provided by The Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship back when I started my first company, I am sure it could have been an even bigger success .  I really wanted to help and I felt compelled to do what I could to contribute to the Center’s ability to provide that guidance and support to new entrepreneurs trying to get started.”  Justin looks forward to also providing mentoring support to these individuals as often as his schedule allows.

It’s a tough world out there, particularly in this economy.  Thanks to The Center, many local entrepreneurs will gain the support they need in order to get the best chance at thriving in the early stages of business.  Couto Solutions is glad to be a part of that.

  • Great Turnout at the Couto Solutions Open House!

What a turn out!  It was awesome to see how many people were interested in visiting the new Couto Solutions’ office.   What was it that got everyone to trek out to the Cal Poly Tech Park on the outer edge of campus? Was it the emails that were sent?  Was it the tweets that were tweeted?  Was it the intrigue of the super cool conference room that brought everyone out?  Well I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that the good turnout was all because of the supportive nature of folks in SLO County who make an honest effort to show their support to fellow SLO County businesses.

Couto Solutions moved into the new space on April 4th, 2011.  When our CEO, Justin Couto, decided to host May 25th, 2011 Softec Open House event over a Jeff the Resident Rockstaryear ago, we all thought we would have plenty of time to get things “dialed in.”  Not a chance.  With a busy work schedule as it is, Justin and I spent many, many, and I mean many late nights at the office organizing, rearranging, straightening, then organizing again and re-rearranging and straightening what we thought was already straight.  Weekends were spent shopping Amazon for cables, cables and more cables.  Billy Souza, our CTO, made the trip from the Central Valley on multiple occasions to work on the data center and to get the monitors mounted and operating throughout the office.   Even our software engineers and designers weren’t spared when it came to getting the office ready.  Many of them pitched in to clean up the 1/8 inch of construction dust that was layered throughout the entire building the morning of the event.  Pulling this together was pure teamwork through and through!

When the open house attendees started to arrive they were greeted in the first level lobby and confereGreat Foodnce room by Couto Solutions’ real rock star, Jeff Hodde.  Jeff provided us with an expertly performed acoustic guitar performance that added just the right flavor to the event.  Speaking of flavor, some scrumptious bites and plenty of cold drinks kept people mingling and talking the first part of the evening until Justin was ready to talk a bit about Couto Solutions and its origins.  Being a pretty mellow guy, he surprised the audience by expressing his happiness about completing this project with a loud “WOOOOHOOOO!” to get things started.    Justin’s speech about how far the company has come and where he plans to take it next was both insightful and motivating. Justin showed off his imaginative skills with the SkiSkate prototype he created decades ago and shared with everyone the lessons he’s learned as an entrepreneur.  Justin’s an incredibly driven guy with a big vision for Couto Solutions’ future, so check back with us periodically to see what we’re up to!

After the networking and presentation that followed, everyone made their way to the second floor and the true star of the show, the Couto Solutions office where Justin demonstrated the features of our aforementioned supeAnthony's Drawingr cool conference room.  A lot of thought was put into the conference room features to make it attractive and, most importantly, functional.  The Couto Solutions logo that is imbedded in the center of the 12 person table looks cool on its own.  However, it really flaunts its functionality when its guitar rises up out of the table with a click of a emote to revealing its data ports, HDMI ports, and power outlets for convenient laptop hookup.  To top that, Justin lowered the large electric illuminated glass boards that drop out of the ceiling in front of each monitor which will allow presenters to draw on top of websites being displayed and discussed.  For this day however, our resident artist, Anthony Harris depicted the Couto Solutions offices, past and present, on one of the glass boards. And, yes, he drew this by hand.

At the end of the evening, guests were encouraged to explore the office and ask any questions they may hGuests Enjoy the Conference Room Featuresave.  Most people asked about the floor, wondering if it was carbon fiber.  Actually, our floors are ordinary porcelain in a not so ordinary striated 12x24 inch tiles giving a neat carbon fiber look.  Also piquing interest was the materials our desks and tables are made off.  The entire office is furnished with Corian tops in “Earth” which gives the office the smooth, clean, uniform look Justin envisioned.  Another curiosity needing satisfying was the way the workstation desks were mounted.  Let me tell you, it took a lot of metal, bolts, sweat and tears but the floating desks look incredible!

Once the crowd made their way home and the wine cups and paper plates were picked up a sense of pride set in immediately followed by exhaustion.  It took a lot of effort and team work to put together a wonderful open house just as it took a lot of effort and team work to elevate Couto Solutions to the company it is today.  For those of you who attended, we are grateful for your enthusiastic support of our company and your participation in Softec.  For those of you who couldn’t make it, our doors are always open to you if you want to get to know more about our company or just want to check out our new office.  Our company is still growing and we’ve got big plans for the future!  Keep us on your radar as we have big things to announce in the coming year.
